Chinese New Year

A key event

Chinese New Year, also known as the Spring Festival, is the most important celebration in Chinese tradition. The exact date varies each year, as it is based on the lunar calendar, but it generally falls between 21 January and 20 February. Each year is associated with one of the twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac, and 2024 is the Year of the Dragon.

The festivities in detail

The festivities generally last 15 days, with New Year's Day marking the start of the celebrations. During this period, people take part in various activities such as parades, fireworks, dragon and lion dances, family meals, visits to temples and the exchange of gifts. Traditions vary from region to region, but the importance of family reunion and celebrating good fortune and prosperity in the New Year remains constant. Traditional decorations include red lanterns, lucky Chinese characters, dragons and lions, all believed to ward off evil spirits and bring good fortune. Festive meals often include symbolic dishes, such as fish, which represents abundance, and glutinous rice dumplings, which symbolise family reunion.

Who celebrates Chinese New Year?

Chinese New Year is celebrated not only in China, but also in many Chinese communities around the world. It is a time of joy, renewal and tradition, deeply rooted in Chinese culture.
